When Jaded Palate Productions, LLC was created in September of 2010, it was unclear what we would first contribute. I mean, three decades of advertising experience was being merged with two and a half decades of gifted cinematography and decades of graphic and internet expertise. What we’ve found 18 months later, is while rather versatile, there is nothing that hits the spot like capturing the essence of a client’s business through a little minumentary….or short profile piece. When we created “Cooking My Way Back Home: The Real Story” for Mitchell Rosenthal we knew we loved this business. (Watch it if you haven’t.)
And now, producing this little “tell all” for Armadillo Willy’s cements our desire to make more of these. You see, it takes a village to make a quality piece: A great cameraman, excellent lighting, a good sound person, a production assistant if you’re lucky, a smart director– who in this case works without a script and just aims enough questions at the client that she hopes she’ll end up with something that doesn’t end up on the editing floor!!! It also takes hours upon hours of editing, tightening, writing and re-writing transcripts, re-working, finding music, fighting over graphics…and the list goes on. Once you hit the BIG IDEA you know it, but it isn’t always sitting around waiting for you either.
If you ever had asked me before how long it would take to make a great 10 minute piece, I would never say, two months. Now, with expertise under my belt, I can confidently speak truth. But, what you get after delivering one of these babies, much like the surprise birthday piece we just did for the talented and illustrious David Weiden is an enormous amount of satisfaction.
You struggle. You fight. You want to kill everyone else in that tunnel with you, but when you come out the other side, you breathe really beautiful air. Its magic, really!!
Weaving the story, finding the best bites, using our minds to create the right humor that stimulates audience appreciation, keeping it simple, letting it run, cutting it off. Wow!!! A wild ride it is. So, there is a real reason I refuse to call it video. It’s just better. It’s just not something that’s found on a phone. Or, off a Vimeo from a college age girl bitching about Asians in the library. This thing is professional, broadcast quality and as good to go as anything you see on TV. Because after all, there’s a lot of crap on tv.
We’re proud of each project and our clients are too. And that is what makes all the sweat equity worth the while. Producing mini-documentaries, not videos, for lovely people.
