The Worst Texas Storm in Over a Decade.. so these sunny skies are all in the magic of post production.

Jaded Palate Productions arrived in Texas for a record-breaking storm that found us sitting on the side of the road until 2am with 12 foot moats surrounding our hotel. (I was told there were alligators and snakes in the water since the bayou had overflowed.)
Since roads were all flooded while we were heading home in the teeming rain– from a brilliant Mexican dinner at Anejo, by the way– we were stuck for 4 hours on the sidewalk. Our client, ironically the cop in the video, kindly bailed us out in his “Sub”urban, leaving the poor rent-a-car deep in sludge.
Feeling like refugees, we arrived at our hotel with no plumbing or power drenched and barefoot. (Not exactly a way to embark on our shoot since there was no rain date built into the schedule.)
Still, the next morning, the show went on. The staff all met in a rented garage, albeit a bit soggy, with a green screen and gorgeous vintage VW bus.
Our client, The Alexander Group, is proof positive that a successful company who function by day as consummate professionals in their industry–the executive search business–can still tear it up in support of a good cause with an innovative marketing campaign.
This is our third video for The Alexander Group, and what makes them so amusing is that the founders are content junkies: they have been using savvy marketing tools to charm their clients and support charities well before video was in vogue.
Since they were early adapters, after many other firms started sending e-cards for the December holidays, The Alexander Group approached us with a new idea: a July 4th video, with one principal as the Statue of Liberty the other Uncle Sam all in a van heading to a party.
How brilliantly ridiculous that founders of this international firm are willing to be so silly, so the owness was on us to create something unforgettable.
With careful use of a green screen, we were able to create this piece, somewhat of a “Little Miss Rainshine,” without ever leaving the garage. Skilled masking coupled with some rather Saturday Night Live acting by the staffers themselves, lead to a fun couple of minutes of July 4th frivolity.
Who would ever think that these regular white shoe folk could turn themselves into a comedy troop–or is acting actually what they do for a living?
So this holiday, declare your Independence, stay dry and sit back and watch The Alexander Group’s festive video. We find it improves with frequency.

Life is funny as it is filled with what I call “foreshadowing.” Much like in any good movie, your life can unfold with little messages along the way, be it a run into an old friend or an enormous connection with a stranger.
I had the latter occur back in 2001 or 2. My daughters used to have a tree frog that was fed live crickets. Each week we would have to stop at the aquarium on Clement Street and purchase one dollars worth of these little fellows–about 10–that would typically escape in the back seat.
As they got older, we would put the crickets in the car and walk around Clement at which point I stumbled over an amazing store: FleurT. I remember thinking at the time I had never seen a store like this in America, only Paris. It was a combination gorgeous flower shop and home for flea market finds never available this side of the Seine! Just to see old chalk boards and zinc light fixtures would tickle me! I quickly befriended the owner and– I’ll never forget– almost scrunched my nose visibly at my fascination with him.
He was shiny and elegant, a true gentleman with French pedigree. I remember the sparkle he had, his kindness may have trumped my intrigue.
Now we fast forward many years, and the handsome shop owner, Jonathan Rachman, had hit his stride and gave me a call to discuss branding and content marketing. His shop had now closed, only after he supplied Oprah, Marc Jacobs and Sara Jessica Parker with flowers and full-blown events. In the ten plus years we have been out of touch, he has designed for hoteliers and the glitterati of San Francisco, but he still maintains his poise, elegance and personal style.
I’m proud to call him my friend and now client. Here he speaks on behalf of his latest project:
